The land borders between the United States and Mexico and Canada will remain closed for non-essential travel until at least December 21, after the three countries agreed to extend restrictions as the COVID-19 outbreak surges.
On Thursday, the official announced the extension of the border closure. Trucks will continue to freely cross the border because the transportation of essential goods remains unrestricted.
Since March, to curb the spread of COVID-19, the border has been closed for non-essential travel.
As COVID-19 cases continue to increase in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the expansion of the epidemic has been largely expected. However, the test results of the two COVID-19 vaccine candidates are encouraging, which increases the hope that the restrictions may be lifted in 2021.
The restrictions did not directly affect the cross-border freight volume. Cross-border freight volumes have recovered from lows during the pandemic.
