Surge In Imports Delays Cargo Shipments At U.S. Busiest Ports

Port managers and other managers say that record imports of goods caused delays from the busiest ports in the United States to other parts of the transportation network.

The total capacity of 20-foot TEU in the Port of Los Angeles in October reached 980,729 units, a year-on-year increase of 27%. High-load imports, which account for more than half of shipments, jumped 29%, marking the third consecutive month of strong growth.

This year’s typical holiday shipping peak has been exaggerated because retailers and manufacturers scrambled to replenish depleted warehouse inventory, and the coronavirus pandemic has triggered unexpected demand for all kinds of items, from patio furniture to the protection of medical staff. equipment.

During the surge in imports, the container residence time (the time a box of cargo stays in the port) doubled to 5 days. Living on the street, the waiting time for warehouse space more than doubled to 7.1 days. Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, said on Wednesday that truck turnaround time is also increasing because the time it takes to find containers in the port’s terminal has become longer.

Seroka said: “It’s impossible for all of us to keep up with such a large freight rate.”

At the same time, importers and warehouse operators reported delays in Los Angeles and neighboring Long Beach ports, which are leading the US in trade with China.

Vacuum cleaner seller Bissell Inc CEO Mark Bissell said: "The cargo arriving at the port is completely packed."

Other importers and warehouse operators told Reuters that the situation has been exacerbated by the shortage of trucks to transport goods across the country.

Long Beach Port Executive Director Mario Cordero told Reuters that the port is transferring some containers to a 40-acre distribution center on its property to ease the port’s congestion.
