Some unemployed employees of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) staged a protest on Monday, urging the Minister of Transport and the NPA's managing director to fulfill their promises and pay their severance pay.

The protesters, mainly security personnel and counting staff on board, were fired after an inspection in 2015.

With the support of the Nigeria Maritime Workers Union, they held a protest at the entrance of the newly established Nigeria Port Authority in Warri.

The protesters claimed that their counterparts in other ports in Nigeria received severance pay, and despite the government's assurances, they have been ignored.

Protest spokesperson Francis Agbudumhe said that failure to pay their benefits affected the lives of those who lost their jobs. Some people have died and some people are sick.

Agbudumhe said: “We have lost many members, some are bedridden; many of us are homeless, our children cannot go to school, and money lenders chase us everywhere.

We are in debt. Even if it is the money we expect to receive, this delay will not solve any problems. But we need this money, it is our right. "

Agbudumhe said that the relevant authorities must actively strive for their interests before the group responsible for executing payments is dissolved.

"This is not a strike, this is a peaceful protest, so that we can get money to meet the needs of the family. We will not stop until we get the money in December this year.

We will stay here until we get the answer. If they refuse, the operation of the port will be closed. "
