Port Of Long Beach's Imports Hit A New Monthly High

September was the busiest month in the history of the Port of Long Beach. It also brought an end to the most active quarter in the 109-year history of the West Coast Center of the United States. Import growth reached double digits.


   In September, the port's throughput was 795,580,000 TEUs, an increase of 13%; while the third quarter's throughput was 2.27 million TEUs, an increase of 14%.


   Compared with September 2019, imports increased by 14% to 405,618 TEUs, while exports fell 9% to 112,556 TEUs. Empty containers shipped back overseas surged 21% to 277,406 TEUs.


Mario Cordero, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach, said: “Large retail stores are reopening, merchants are hoarding inventory for the winter holidays, and the increase in e-commerce use seems to be a persistent trend, which was raised by consumers during the recent home order period. of."


   "However, in the remaining months of 2020, we must proceed with caution because the national economy continues to be severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic."


   Demand for furniture, paint, and office equipment continues to increase as consumers make home renovations and work from home during the pandemic.


   As many as 92 container ships docked here in September this year, 19 of which were temporarily docked, making up for the cancellation of the voyage earlier this year.


   In addition, dockers transferred a record number of freight containers at the TTI Wharf of T Wharf, which is the record of the most ship-to-shore freight recorded in the Port of Long Beach in a month.


   In the first three quarters of this year, the port's throughput was 5,707,305 TEUs, an increase of 0.5% over the same period in 2019.
