Maersk, the world's largest container shipping company, has announced that it will cancel all suspended voyages along the Pacific coast.

The company cited the strong import volume in North America in the past 60 days (which is expected to last until at least November) and announced the cancellation of all trans-Pacific routes.

In recent weeks, the trans-Pacific to the west coast shipping spot price set a record, close to 4000 US dollars per container, which caused some panic in the shipping market.

In the past week, the Chinese government has intervened to require shipping companies to increase capacity on trade routes and ease price increases. COSCO Shipping and its subsidiaries Orient Overseas (OOCL) and Maersk (Maersk) have agreed to the Chinese government’s measures.

The United States Federal Maritime Commission in Washington also held a meeting this week to study the situation. "If there is any indication that the carrier’s actions may have violated the competition standards in Article 6(g) of the Shipping Act, the Commission will immediately seek to resolve these issues with the carrier. If necessary, FMC will apply to the Federal Court for an injunction, It is forbidden to further implement non-compliant alliance agreements.

Maersk predicts that the current strong market will continue until November and until January before the Chinese New Year.

It is expected that other shipping companies will follow Maersk's approach. Maersk added in its consultation report yesterday that it is restarting idle production capacity, looking for more rental containers, and speeding up the delivery of empty containers back to Asia.

Compared with the same period last year, the container throughput of the Port of Los Angeles-Long Beach on the west coast of the United States has increased significantly, and imports in August increased by 13% and 18% respectively. In contrast, its container throughput dropped by an average of 17% in February, March and May this year.
