Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, 62 ships were berthed in San Pedro Bay, including 20 container ships bound for the port of Los Angeles.

It is understood that the United States Coast Guard released a video confirming the severity of traffic congestion at the ports of Los Angeles and long beach in San Pedro Bay.

"Under normal circumstances, we don't normally berth any container ships," gene seroka, executive director of port of Los Angeles, said at a news conference on Wednesday. Before the surge in imports, we usually see 10 to 12 container ship berths a day at the port of Los Angeles. Today, we handle an average of 15 container ships a day, "seroka said. "At present, about 15% of the ships going to Los Angeles will berth directly. 85% of the ships are anchored and the average waiting time has been increasing. When the ship first started anchoring and waiting in November, the anchoring time was about two and a half days. So far in February, the berthing time is now eight days. "

Container terminals, freight companies, railways and warehouses are "overloaded," he said

"The length of container stay at the terminal is still about five days, double the amount before the surge in imports last summer. Traditional 40 foot container waiting warehouse space is now 7.6 days, "seroka said.

What is the cause of port congestion?

He said many factors contributed to the congestion in San Pedro Bay.

"It's an epidemic driven buying spree, different from what we've seen in the past with American consumers. Most of us don't spend money on services. We don't go to the movies, we don't fly, we don't go to the ball games. We spend money on tangible goods. This is the real reason for the unprecedented surge in imports.

Container ships have been forced to extend their berthing time, forcing some shipping companies to cancel several voyages this month. This is not due to a lack of demand for goods, but to a lack of available vessels to handle these services.

The delay on land caused a deadlock at sea. The high volume of immigration and the complex logistics inside and outside the port have caused land delays.

One of the challenges facing the port is the new coronavirus infection of dock workers. As of January 17, the International Federation of terminals and warehouses (ilwu) reported that 694 of its members had tested positive. By January 25, the number had jumped to 803.
