According to the International Air Transport Association, last year, after the coronavirus pandemic, global air cargo volume fell by 10.6% year-on-year, the largest drop since records began in 1990.
But how is the year going for German market participants? How are the top 10 air freight forwarders and airlines performing in 2020?
Freight forwarder: mixed signal of DSV
At first glance, DSV, the Danish freight forwarder, seems to be the big winner in the German air cargo market in 2020, with ZS increasing by 34% over 2019 (see the table at the end of the article).
But a closer look at the data reveals the opposite: DSV has actually lost market share if Pan Asian integration is taken into account.
Compared with the cumulative freight volume (about 113700 tons) of DSV and panamania group in 2019, the freight volume of DSV group decreased by more than 43% to 64300 tons, almost double the overall market (22%).
In 2019 alone, the freight rate of new desway port is lower than that of panamania (65700 tons).
This puts the company in fourth place, but compared with the cumulative market share of the company in 2019, the company's market share has decreased by nearly 2.2 percentage points.
On the other hand, dessoon + Nagel (KN) and Schenker are the winners in 2020. Both freight companies lost volume (KN: 8.8% compared with 2019; when Schenker merged Schenker Deutschland (jetcargo) and Schenker, 19.4%), but they were able to increase their market share.
Kn increased by 2.2 percentage points to 15.1%, and Shenke's market share was 12.4% (increased by 0.4 percentage points).
Compared with 2019, DHL's global freight business volume has decreased by nearly 24%, still ranking third with 8.9% market share (0.2 percentage point decrease) after United Airlines and Shenke.
Among the major freight forwarders, the biggest winner is EXPEDITORS International: by 2020, its business volume will be 1.8% lower than that of the previous year, and it is the only small air freight company with increased market share among the top 10 air freight companies (2.7% / up 0.6%).
With the help of this result, the company rose four places to fifth, ahead of Dachser.
Airlines: ambitious people cargo aircraft
Cargolux is the biggest winner of the top 10 airlines in 2020. Compared with 2019, the Luxemburg based airline's cargo volume increased by 16.3%, significantly exceeding the overall market, which fell by 22%.
By 2020, the market share of cargolux will be slightly lower than 12.4%, about 138000 tons, an increase of 4 percentage points over 2019.
Although the other three top 10 airlines (Qatari airlines, China Southern Airlines and Leipzig eurotrans) have increased their cargo volume in 2020, none of them can match cargolux's record.
Overall, the shares of the top 10 airlines fell 28.2%, lagging behind the overall market.
Lufthansa Cargo is the market leader in Germany, with nearly 214000 tons of cargo, but its leading position is shrinking.
Compared with last year, the airline lost nearly a third of its tonnage and its market share fell 1.8 percentage points to 19.2%.
The biggest drop in 2020 is the Russian cargo airline airbridge cargo, whose trading volume dropped by 53.8%, market share dropped by about 2.2 percentage points, ranking down 5 places to the 9th.
KLM ranked third in the top 10, with passenger traffic down 30.1%. Its market share fell to 4.4%.
